CI - Committee on Innovation
CI Theme 3: Integrate care delivery and clinical education
Educating physicians for professional practice requires an understanding of the current priorities in patient care and quality improvement, and how programs and institutions benefit from adapting and applying them to the education of residents and fellows.
Recommendation: Explore innovative ways to prepare residents for practice in the 21st century, including simulation and rehearsal, improved teaching of hand-offs and other approaches for maintaining continuity of care under team- and shift-based approaches to care, and enhanced teaching and practice in ambulatory management for patients with chronic health conditions.
Innovative Approaches in Ambulatory Care for Patients with Chronic Conditions Residency programs participating in both the Academic Chronic Care Collaborative and the Internal Medicine Educational Innovations Project (PDF - August 2007 Bulletin)
Involving Residents in Quality Improvement: Contrasting “Top-Down” and “Bottom-Up” Approaches (PDF, August 2008) explores practical approaches to involve residents in clinical quality improvement (QI) efforts, and contrasts institution-level quality improvement projects, such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI’s) 100,000 and 5 Million Lives Campaign, and program- and resident-initiated projects.
