CHICAGO, March 16, 2005 – Jerry Vasilias, PhD, has been named executive director of the residency review committees for pediatrics and family medicine at the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Dr. Vasilias, who has a doctorate in social psychology from Loyola University in Chicago, will direct the activities of two ACGME residency review committees, the RRC for Pediatrics and the RRC for Family Medicine. He will head the team of staff members who support the residency review committees in their work of setting standards for residency programs, reviewing programs and making accreditation decisions. The committees are comprised of volunteer physicians appointed by the appropriate specialty boards, specialty organizations and the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education.

“We are very pleased to have Dr. Vasilias join the Department of RRC Activities,” said Jeanne Heard, MD, PhD, director of the department of RRC activities. “He brings many skills to the position of RRC executive director including knowledge of ACGME policies and specialty program requirements, ability to clearly communicate with diverse groups and manage multiple projects at the same time. He is energetic and enthusiastic and committed to providing a smooth transition in the team that supports these two RRCs. “

Dr. Vasilias, who has been with the ACGME for eight years, previously served as associate director of field activities. He replaces Mary Alice Parsons, who is retiring after 26 years with the ACGME, as executive director of the two RRCs.
