ACGME seeking nominations for 2004 Parker Palmer awards

Annual award honors program directors for dedication and innovation in leading medical residency programs

CHICAGO, April 23, 2003 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education is accepting nominations for the 2004 Parker J. Palmer "Courage to Teach" awards. The Parker Palmer awards are presented each year to 10 to 15 medical residency program directors in recognition of their dedication to teaching and mentoring medical residents. Program directors, administrators, faculty and residents are encourage to nominate program directors who have developed innovative teaching programs and demonstrated a commitment to graduate medical education.

The award is named after Parker J. Palmer, PhD, a sociologist and educator who wrote The Courage to Teach. Dr. Palmer also developed a teacher education program that has served as a model for teachers of physicians.

The Parker Palmer award recipients will be honored at the ACGME's 2004 winter meeting in Chicago. They will also be invited to attend an educational retreat.

Nominations are due by June 16. Application forms and information on the nomination process are available on the ACGME's Web site. Nominators with questions may contact Marsha Miller, the ACGME's associate executive director, at (312) 755-5041.
