CHICAGO, Nov. 21, 2002 – The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has chosen 11 medical residency program directors to receive the 2003 Parker. J. Palmer Courage to Teach award.

The annual award honors medical residency program directors who have shown their commitment to graduate medical education through their outstanding work in mentoring and teaching physicians in training and developing and improving residency programs. It is named in honor of Parker J. Palmer, Ph.D., a sociologist and educator who wrote The Courage to Teach, a book about the intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of teaching. Dr. Palmer developed a teacher education program for K-12 teachers that has served as a model for teachers of physicians, said David C. Leach, M.D., the ACGME's executive director.

"Such concepts as living divided no more, creating space to have conversations about teaching and learning, recognizing that medicine is a cooperative rather than a productive art, and developing practical wisdom in addition to knowledge and skills have all either been developed explicitly by Parker or have resulted from an extension of his thinking into medicine," said Dr. Leach.

The ACGME received more than 200 nominations from medical residents, faculty and deans at academic medical centers. From those nominations, the ACGME's executive committee chose 10 program directors and one retired program director to receive the award, which will be presented to the directors at the ACGME's winter meeting Feb. 11-12 in Chicago. The program directors will also participate in a spring retreat with Dr. Palmer at the Fetzer Institute in Kalamazoo, Mich.

In their nomination letters, the program directors chosen for the award were described with phrases such as "a true leader for house staff and chief residents," "tackles the most difficult clinical problems," "delights in teaching," and "a tireless supportive mentor."
