CHICAGO, Dec. 10, 2004 – Ronald B. Berggren, MD, who was instrumental in reorganizing the Institutional Requirements for sponsoring institutions, has been named as the recipient of the 2005 John C. Gienapp Award, presented by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The award, which Dr. Berggren will receive at an awards dinner in February, honors him for his significant lifetime contributions to the ACGME and graduate medical education. The award is named after the ACGME’s first executive director, John C. Gienapp, PhD, who headed the ACGME from its inception in 1981 to 1997.

Dr. Berggren was appointed to the ACGME’s Institutional Review committee, which reviews institutions that sponsor residency programs, in 1996 and served on it until 2003. He chaired the IRC from 2002 to 2002. During his time as IRC chair, Dr. Berggren took the lead in reorganizing the Institutional Requirements and advocated for the accreditation of sponsoring institutions.

“Dr Berggren has been inexorable in his attempts to improve graduate medical education in the United States. His quiet yet effective manner, lucid logic, and clarity of purpose have been a model for us all,” said David C. Leach, MD, executive director of the ACGME.

Dr. Berggren, a board-certified plastic surgeon, also served on the ACGME’s Residency Review Committee for Plastic Surgery from 1984 to 1990, and chaired the committee in 1989. Dr. Berggren was a member of the ACGME Board of Directors, as a representative of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, from 1987 to 1992 and in 1994. He was elected chair of the Board twice, in 1989 and 1994. In addition, he chaired the ACGME’s Monitoring Committee in 1987.

Dr. Berggren earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1957, and completed residencies in general and plastic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a professor emeritus of surgery at Ohio State University, and has held numerous positions with medical and medical education organizations and committees.
