Dr. Nasca named to list of most influential physician executives
ACGME CEO Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP, elected to be on Modern Healthcare’s  list of the 50 most powerful physician executives

CHICAGO, May 13, 2009 – Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP, chief executive officer of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, was voted by the readers of Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician magazines as one of the 50 most powerful physician executives in the United States.

Dr. Nasca was recognized for his leadership of the  ACGME, a non-profit organization that sets the standards for graduate medical education and accredits more than 8,500 residency programs in the United States. Since he became CEO in 2007, Dr. Nasca has spearheaded many initiatives, including projects to develop specialty specific competency milestones, a review of the duty hour standards at the five-year mark, and the launch of an online portfolio system for residents.

Dr. Nasca previously served as dean of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, as well as senior vice president for academic affairs at Thomas Jefferson University and president of Jefferson University Physicians. He has held many other medical education leadership positions, including chair of the ACGME’s Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine and president of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. He has served as a member of the Health and Human Services’ Council on Graduate Medical Education, National Board of Medical Examiners, Liaison Committee for Graduate Medical Education, and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

Other physician executives on the list include leaders of health care associations, government agencies, and hospitals and health systems. The readers of the two publications nominated 4,300 physician executives for the list. A ballot of finalists was compiled from those nominations; more than 27,600 votes were cast to narrow the list to the 50 most powerful physician executives.
