ACGME publishes latest edition of data book with new section on long-term statistical trends

CHICAGO, Sept 2, 2010– The Academic Year 2009-2010 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Data Resource Book– featuring a new section with graphs illustrating statistical trends over the past decade – is now available on the ACGME website. The PDF-formatted book, which can be viewed and downloaded for free, can be accessed at www.acgme.org/databook.

The data book opens with a series of charts showing long-term trends in program, resident, and sponsoring institution data. The remainder of the data book consists of 100 pages of academic year 2009-2010 statistics on program accreditation statuses, program directors, residents, institutions, and the geographic distribution of programs and residents.

The 2009-2010 data book includes the following statistics:

  • In the most recent academic year, the number ACGME-accredited residency programs totaled 8,814, an increase of 976 (12.5%) programs from the 7,838 programs that existed in academic year 2001-2002.
  • In academic year 2009-2010, 111,386 residents were enrolled in ACGME-accredited residency programs, an increase of 14,970 (15.5%) residents from the 96,416 enrolled in ACGME-accredited programs in academic year 2001-2002. A total of 25,865 residents entered pipeline programs in academic year 2009-2010, a 7.2% increase in the number of residents in pipeline programs since academic year 2001-2002. Pipeline programs are those in specialties leading to initial board certification. 
  • Internal medicine was the specialty with the largest percentage, 24.5%, of residents enrolled in its residency programs, followed by family medicine, 10.4%; pediatrics, 8.9%; and surgery, 7.8%.
  • Six hundred and eight-one institutions sponsored residency programs during 2009-2010. Of the sponsoring institutions, 377 were considered multisite sponsors, meaning they sponsored programs in more than one specialty and affiliated subspecialties, while 304 institutions sponsored programs in only one specialty and its affiliated subspecialties.  In addition, the number of participating teaching institution where residents rotate for clinical experience nearly doubled over the last decade.

The 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 editions of the data book are also available online as free PDF books.  Paperback editions of the data book from 2002-2003 to 2007-2008 can be purchased for $35 each.
